Harris Health System Breaks Ground on New $1.6 Billion Hospital in Northeast Houston

Introduction

Harris Health System, UTHealth Houston, Harris County, and the City of Houston gathered on Thursday to commence construction on a new $1.6 billion hospital at the Harris Health Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) Hospital Campus in northeast Houston.

Features

This project initiates Harris Health’s $2.9 billion, multiphase strategic facilities plan, which includes building the new trauma hospital, renovating the current LBJ facility.

It expanding Harris Health Ben Taub Hospital, and adding three new health centers in Northwest, Southwest, and Eastern Harris County.

The new hospital will cover approximately 1.3 million square feet and offer 390 private rooms, with the potential to add 60 more as needed.

It will also feature a rooftop helipad, 15 dedicated operating rooms, and a cutting-edge hybrid operating room, designed to handle a range of medical procedures from routine to complex emergency surgeries.

The new hospital will continue to serve as an expanded clinical training ground for residents and faculty of UTHealth Houston’s McGovern Medical School.

“The northeast side has faced underdevelopment for many years, especially in healthcare,” Porsa added. “This hospital will be central to serving this community for generations to come.”

This 12-story facility will replace the existing LBJ Hospital as the county’s next Level I trauma center, with its opening planned for late 2028.
